Top Tip Thursday: Choose where to open Office files in Microsoft Teams

Files shared in Microsoft Teams automatically open in the Teams app, but now you can change your settings to have files open in your browser or the desktop app of either Word, PowerPoint, or Excel.

This eliminates the hassle of having to manually choose how to open each document sent to you. It also allows you to access your messages on Teams without having to close your document.

To change the default settings in Teams, you simply need to:

  1. Click the ellipses (…) at the top of your screen and press Settings.
  2. In General, scroll down to Files.
  3. In Files, choose between Teams, Desktop app, or Browser to open the files.

And that’s it! If you choose to change your default settings to either desktop app or browser, this means no more going back and forth between messages and your document (which can be quite frustrating).
